Footage of police manhandling an unarmed black woman in Madison, Wisconsin has gone viral and many are disturbed by what they’ve seen. In the video, you can see 18-year-old Genele H. Laird standing by East Towne Mall as an officer is struggling to get her on the ground. Eventually, a backup officer comes to his aid and continuously drives his knee into Laird’s ribs. He also punches her a few times. Read more below!
Once they’ve got her on the ground, one of the officers repeatedly taser Laird’s leg and torso all the while she is saying, “I can’t breathe” and even pleads with officers to get off of her. At the end of the clip, the men put a bag over the 18 year olds head as she lies face-down on the ground.
According to US Uncut, a Press release from the Madison Police Department alleges that Laird, “…had threatened an employee at a Taco Bell restaurant in the mall’s food court, accused a worker of stealing her phone, and allegedly brandished a knife.” She appears to not be armed in the video and officers do not seem to have acquired a weapon from Laird. Laird was arrested on tentative charges of disorderly conduct while armed with a knife, resisting police causing injury, battery to a police officer and discharge of bodily fluid.
