Shanga Hankerson, son of soul Singer, Gladys Knight and owner of the three Atlanta-area locations of Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles is in hot water! The Georgia Department of Revenue is accusing him “of stealing over $650,000” in sales taxes and withholding them from the state. The agency also reports that after penalties and interest, the sum exceeds $1 million and they believe that Hankerson used the money for personal reasons. Read more below!
Department of Revenue agents executed search warrants at the Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles locations in Atlanta and a corporate office in Riverdale. They “unsuccessfully attempted to serve arrest warrants on Shanga Hankerson at his home,” but later found him in Ft. Lauderdale and negotiated the terms of his surrender with police.
As for when the businesses will re-open, Atlanta’s tax attorney Josh Waites told reporters, “As soon as a receivership agreement is reached between the state and Hankerson, the restaurant should reopen for business.” Gladys Knight is in not involved with the whole thing she only gave her son permission to
use her name for the restaurant.
A statement from her camp reads:
“Gladys Knight lent her name to her son’s restaurants in the Atlanta area, similar to a celebrity endorsement. Ms. Knight was not involved in any way with the operation of the restaurants and she is sure that her son and his business partners will rectify the situation. As always, her main concern is for her family’s well-being and she is making sure the family has the guidance they need to assess the situation and move forward.”
