Thandie Newton is one of the most talented and natural gifted actors I know. The 43-year-old has for years been driven to play roles that depict race relations, women empowerment and more, but recently during an interview with W Magazine she revealed a moment that may stem from her to playing such aggressive roles.
According to W Magazine, there was a time she experienced sexual harassment in the entertainment industry. She said :
“A director, on a callback, had a camera shooting up my skirt and asked me to touch my t–s and think about the guy making love to me in the scene,” Newton said. “I thought, ‘Ok, this is a little weird,’ but there was a female casting director in the room and I’d done weird stuff before so I did it.”
The director later sent it to all of his friends for their own pleasure.
Newton knew something was off because an incident at a film festival lead a drunken producer to approach her mentioning that he saw her not too long ago somewhere. He immediately “lurched away looking really shocked that he’d said that,” Newton said.
The actress later found out “that the director was showing that audition tape to his friends after poker games at his house,” said Newton. “And they would all get off on it.”
The beautiful actress who has two daughters, one 11-year-old and a 16-year-old doesn’t want something ever like this to occur with any young females who are trying to make it, as she admits she was young and “naive” at the time.
Newton hopes to change females lives after this: “One person will read this and it will stop them getting sexually abused by a director. That’s the person I’m interested in.”
