Authorities have now named 29-year-old Omar Mateen as the shooter who killed at least 50 people at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL early Sunday morning. Click through the gallery for the latest updates on the gunman.
Omar Mir Seddique Mateen is a United States citizen, born to Afghani parents.
He was married in 2009, and was a registered voter, as well as a notary public up until 2012.
Prior to the shooting, he lived in Port Lucie, Florida, where he worked as a security guard.
Mateen traveled 125 miles to Orlando with two guns and an unnamed device to carry out the "well-organized" shooting, which left at least 50 dead and 53 injured.
Mateen's father revealed that his son had become enraged after seeing two men kissing months ago in Miami, and thinks that the shooting might be related.
In a press conference, the FBI stated that there are suggestions that Mateen may have Jihadist leanings.
NBC News reported that Mateen called the emergency services before the attack and swore allegiance to the so-called Islamic State militant group.
The group later said - via its affiliated Amaq news agency - that an IS "fighter" had carried out the attack.
Mr Obama described the attack as "the brutal murder of dozens of innocent people".
"It was an act of terror and an act of hate," he said, adding that it was a heartbreaking day for the LGBT community.
An attack on any American is an attack on all, he added. "We are united in grief, in outrage and resolve to defend our people."
French President Francois Hollande expressed "horror" at the killings, and said Americans had the "full support of France" in this "difficult time".
