So who is Thomas Mair?

Tommy Mair

Thomas Mair has been described as a loner who ''apparently'' has  a history of mental health problems. Thomas was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland.  According to different sources, Thomas was a subscriber to S. A. Patriot, a South African magazine that was published by the pro-apartheid group, the White Rhino Club. Read more below!

According to Telegraph, ''the club describes the magazine’s editorial stance as being against “multi-cultural societies” and “expansionist Islam”. A blog post attributed to the group, dated January 2006, described Mair as “one of the earliest subscribers and supporters of S. A. Patriot.''

Thomas lives in a detached house on the Field Head council estate, in Birstall. According to his neighbours he moved in with his grandmother who passed away 20 years ago and he never had a full time employment.
According to one of his neighbours : ''He's just quiet. He kept himself to himself. He lived by himself. He's been on his own for about 20 years. I've never seen a lot of people visiting or anything like that.'

A picture has been circulated on social media that is said to show the suspect being arrested after the attack in Leeds this afternoon

According to Clarke Rothwell who runs a cafe near where the attack took place '' the MP was shot and stabbed multiple times. He said: ' The attacker was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife.' Another witness, Sam Watson, added: 'The man walked away calmly and nobody wanted to approach him.'

Police officers are maintaining a 'significant and large crime scene' in the Birstall area of Leeds where Mrs Cox was killed this afternoon
According to another witness , Mr Abdallah '' the weapon looked handmade and that the man who had been wrestling with the assailant continued to do so even after he saw the gun, the man stepped back with the gun and fired it and then he fired a second shot, as he was firing he was looking down at the ground.'

According to dry cleaner , Aamir Tahir, Thomas was heard shouting 'Britain first'.
He said: 'The lady I work with heard two loud bangs. I wish I was there because I would have tried to stop him.
'Apparently the guy who did it shouted 'Britain first' and if I had been there I would have tackled him.'

Police and forensics officers carry out searches in the area of Birstall where Mrs Cox was fatally injured this afternoon

Another witness said ''I heard the shot and I ran outside and saw some ladies from the cafe running out with towels. There was loads of screaming and shouting and the police officers showed up.'' 'He was shouting 'Britain first' when he was doing it and being arrested. He was pinned down by two police officers and she was taken away in an ambulance.'

Britain First is the name of a far-Right group which said it was 'not involved and would never encourage behaviour of this sort'. Daniel Blyth, a company director from Birstall, told the paper he saw seven police cars 'racing up' the road to the scene

A jacket, handbag and shoes were left at the scene. They are believed to belong to the MP who was attacked in broad daylight today

Jo Cox's husband Brendan, tweeted a photo of his wife a few hours after she died. He later urged people to 'fight against the hatred that killed her.' He said :
'Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo's friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo. 'Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.
Ms Cox, 41, is pictured with her husband Brendan on election night when she was elected as an MP for the Batley and Spen area
'She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Hate doesn't have a creed, race or religion, it is poisionous. 'Jo would have no regrets about her life, she lived every day of it to the full.'
